Masterclass Details + Suggestions:

This 80 minute class has both an educational component and a movement component.

Both the education and the movement are appropriate for those who are currently having back pain, those who have had back pain challenges in the past, and those who have never struggled with back pain but want to avoid it in the future as we all get older and want to remain healthy and active, or as we pursue our ambitions in our outdoor activities.

Part 1 is the educational component. In the first ~10 minutes of the class, you'll learn what happens biomechanically in our spine when we get joint or muscle imbalances (which can happen for many reasons). You'll learn how the thoracic spine, our upper back, affects both our neck and lower back when it is out of balance in stability and/or mobility. Most importantly, you'll learn why that matters in real life and in our outdoor activities.

Part 2 is the movement component. This is the majority of the class, as we do a full comprehensive movement practice together focused on our thoracic spine. The movement component gives you some tools to correct these imbalances (which most of us do have, even if we don't currently have pain), specifically targeting the thoracic spine in a way that is also supportive to our neck and lower back. In the movement practice I also teach you how to stay in a pain-free range of motion with the activities, and how to modify some of the movements if you do have pain.

The movement component includes three things:

1. Basic foundational motor control practice: setting the groundwork

2. Stability: Muscle & Joint

3. Mobility: Muscle & Joint

Come prepared to move, and be able to move comfortably in standing, lying down, and on all fours in your space. If you have a large bath towel or beach towel, bring that, as we'll use it for one of the mobility series exercises.
